Hello People,

Time goes on and so do we.

It's time to start a new activity. Now we will learn how to talk about other people, ok?

Keep posted for the activities.

C. What have you been involved with?

- Well, we have given those texts a really close look but how about investigating it a little bit more? Whenever we are filling in information about ourselves, in most cases we are required to talk about what we do or what our hobbies are. Have a look at the sentences bellow (extracted from profiles) and try to understand how people talk about it:

, music videos and short films. HAVE also directed one shorl film
whatever else takes my fancy. HAVE also done some photographic
say 2 fast 2 furious. I would HAVE loved to star in that.
reasons take a likinf too, Id HAVE to say 2 fast 2 furious. I

  1. How is "have" being used in those sentences?
  2. How would you used it to talk about what you do?

E. A video about myself

  1. After filling and completing our profiles it might be interesting to find out about how people talk about themselves in other ways. Go to our Webnote space and watch a video from the You Tube with a girl talking about herself and leave your comments and discuss with your collegues there.
  2. Taking into consideration the discussion you all have had about the video, write down a text you might use to talk about yourself in a video or even better record the video, send it to the You Tube and post the adress for us so we can all watch and comment on it.

What's your pic?

D. Writing or Completing My Profile

  1. As we have gathered a lot of info about ourselves, let´s put it to good use. What do you say? If you already have an account in one of those social networks, like Orkut, Facebook, Hi Five or MySpace, go there and revise your profile. Now in case you don´t you might as well get started. You can go to MySpace or Facebook to create and fill in a profile there. After that send friend requests and see how your friends react to how you described yourself.
I told you it would be fun, didn't I?

B. Discussing identity

  1. Before moving on, read your colleagues posts and take notes of anything you find interesting.
  2. Now that you have taken a look at the texts, let´s look closer at Larry´s profile. Answer the questions bellow by replying to this post.
  • What kind of picture has he chosen for his page? How would you choose yours?
  • In Larry's profile he claims to be a Democrat. What does that have to do with his identity? Would you write about that in your profile? Would a person's party influence your opinion about her/him? Why?
  • Can his favorite pages show the kind of person he is? How? Which pages, links or communities do you identify yourself with? Would you add them to your profile?
  • Can you guess what kind of teacher he is from the information in his profile? How?
  • How would you talk about the kind of professional you are?

A. Searching identity

The following activities aim at making it clear for the students that the texts studied have a purpose and a social function, they are presented in a relatively steady way regarding the use of vocabulary, grammar and organization. It is also part of our objectives to get students to reflect upon the concept of identity.

  1. Read the following texts and search for clues on what kind of texts they are and what the purpose is.
  2. How do these profiles show their owner's identity and how they see themselves?
  3. Which words best caracterize these people? Do you think they are common in this kind of text?
  4. Would you see yourself or one of your mates in the same way?
  5. How do you talk about yourself when you fill in a profile? Does it matter? Why?

PS: Remember to consider all aspects of the text, which include the pictures, choices of communities, favorite links, etc.

Take notes and reply to this post, ok?
